January 30, 2008 - Review of Haines and Skagway salmon in 2007

Sun Burst on the Chilkat River

The final 2007 tally is in for Salmon in Haines, Alaska. The Alaskan Department of Fish and Game summed it up on their website. In a nutshell:

  • Chilkoot River Coho - late and below average
  • Chilkoot River Sockeye - 72,561 through the weir above the 30 year average
  • Chilkoot River Pink - well above average
  • Chilkat River Coho - two weeks late and well below average. 25,129 fish, well below the escapement goal range of 30,000- 70,000 fish. Commercial fishery was the lowest since they have been using coded wire tracking
  • Chilkat River King - below average
  • Chilkat River Sockeye - below average
  • Chilkat River Pink - above average
