It should be no surprise that with the ice going out, the action is hot. Those poor starved fish are now getting light, structure, bugs and energy. Put the spring cleaning and yard work on hold and get out and fish…now.
I packed up the fishing kayak and took off for a quick paddle at Pumphouse. I was not totally prepared and a bit unorganized but with fly rod and flies; what more did I need. It was early and I was the only one on the lake.
I tried out the dropper technique with a bead head nymph on the top and a chironomid dropper. Caught and released three rainbows, two on the top bead head and one on the chironomid. It was a great first day. I heard that a 5 pound char was caught a week ago and saw a kid there with two fish himself.
There are plenty of options with Grayling, Rainbow and Arctic Char in this small lake.
