June 04, 2008 - Hidden Lakes Kayak Fishing

Kayak Fishing Hidden Lakes

Steve, Kalin and I decided that a late night paddle at Hidden would be the winner. Personally, I enjoy Pumphouse early in the year but need more water come June.  Hidden has some big ‘bows in it so the thrill of hooking into a monster was definitely part of the attraction. The other reason I wanted to go to Hidden #1 was to see how the portage with the fishing kayaks would go. The smaller yaks we had were not bad but could be aided with a kayak cart. We starting paddling at around 9pm with the sun just starting to set. It was a georgeous night with a little north-east wind. We trolled with woolly buggers for a while, with only Steve getting into a small rainbow.  Steve nor Kalin have tried Hidden #3 so that was our next stop. There was plenty of rising going on all throughout the lake so we knew something was going to happen.  Steve suggested it was a green chironomid hatch and given the action he was getting he was right. Unfortunately, I felt like the odd man out as I has a sinking tip line which made it a challenge to get into any real dry fly action.  I was able to hook into a couple small ones with a chironomid pattern fished slowly under the surface.  With some guidance from Steve we all caught a bunch of small rainbow and managed to keep them out of the sticks. We must have fished there a couple hours with the company of bats, a fox, beavers and some loons.  On the short haul back to Hidden #1 we noticed some crazy rising action right at our feet.  The ended up being a one-hour detour casting and catching a mess of Kokannee.  It was great to take a few home for the BBQ.  Kokannee are a land-locked salmon (sockeye) so while small, they are great eating with nice firm pinkish meat. There was some great fishing chemistry out there as we kept fishing until close to 1:30am.  It made for a few extra trips to Timmy’s today as I has to work with only a few hours sleep. Isn’t the midnight sun a wonderful thing! Next on the agenda is McLean.
