August 28, 2007 - Haines Alaska Sockeye Report (from Scott)

The weekend started slow, with 4 or 5 lost sockeye on the pixies and just a few pinks to show for a couple days of intermittent family fishing. On Sunday I switched to the fly rod (the reverse of your strategy) and got lucky right away, landing this nice one on my first cast with a pink Zonker! Lost a couple more, but didn’t snag one fish in about 5 hours of flyfishing, which was a real treat for fish and fishers alike.

Ended the trip with 2 really nice sockeye, the second on a pink Babine Special, but I watched one guy land by hand (and release) about 10 sockeye in a couple hours just upstream. He was right in the lane, and very zen about the whole thing, not even budging when sandwiched by marauding bears on both shores. I don’t know that I’ll chuck a pixie in that river again:

Let’s talk coho.

Scott,

That is a wonderful picture of a flyfisher swinging a fly and a little one behind. Very cool.
