It has been a while that I have tried a Yukon pothole lake. I wanted to try out Chadburn with my fishing kayak for the first time ever. It was a great paddle and a lousy fish. Did not feel or see a thing. I sure enjoyed having the rudder down as the wind was pretty strong. Saw four otters and a couple of beavers kicking around the lake. It is a beautiful lake but I need to find out if there are fish and when it was stocked last. Not a really enlightening post but it is getting a little late in the year.
We took a deep hooked 5lb laker out of Chadburn two years ago. Not sure when it was last stocked, but divers still see fish in it.
Thanks Darrin. Yes, it was not meant to be. Rainbow are a tricky lot. That is usually the way it goes though…nothing all day and then one large Rainbow makes it all worth it. Not on my day of fishing. Good for you and thanks for the comment.
Hi,
Chadburn Lake isn’t on the list of regularly stocked rainbow lakes. By its own nature, Chadburn Lake has natal Lake Trout and is under Special Management Waters (C) retention rules. Check them out!
Now, if you had paddled to the northleft, that would make it northwest I believe, you would see the less-than-1K path that leads to Chadden Lake, which is generously stocked with rainbows that have been known to grow to gargantuan sizes. They are a sucker for dragonfly nymphs, water boatman and shiny metal impersonators.
I also find that if a small lake has a few otters swimming around, it will be poor fishing as the fish are spooked by these voracious eaters. Once the lake has fed them well, meaning fewer fish are available, they will move on to another lake to continue this feast. They may be ‘cute’ but they will bite the hand that feeds them.
