A recent CBC News story states: “Salmon watchers in the Yukon say Alaskan pollock fishermen are to blame for dwindling chinook salmon stocks, which led to a poor salmon run on the Yukon River this year.“ For the full story click here.
As we know from the Whitehorse Fish Ladder this year, the number of Chinook Salmon passing through was dismal. Gerry Couture, whom I have written about before in “Tying the Red Ass Bug”, tells it like it is. Its good to know we have people like Gerry, who have the knowledge over the years representing our interests in Alaska. I am sure the Alaskans would like to find a solution as well.
What a precarious position this is, we hatch them, they fish them, and we all try to eat them. Those fish don’t stand much of a chance unless we can figure this fish politics stuff out. I am no expert but I sure do want my kids to enjoy Yukon salmon for years to come.
