Every year the Yukon Salmon Committee holds a salmon related art contest. It is a great opportunity to educate children on the importance of salmon in our lives as Yukoners. This year I helped my son’s Whitehorse Elementary kindergarten class create a materpiece. Madame Julie’s class along with substitute Monsieur Paul offered me carte blanche with the kids.
I started the class with a great kids story called “salmon stream”. It is very image rich and tells the story of a salmon egg that makes it to the ocean and comes back again. It also speaks to the importance of decomposing salmon providing nutrients back into the environment. We spoke about how the salmon feed bears and make trees grow big/ .

They took it from there and created their own little salmon materpieces and slapped them with care on the stream. I knew the kids understood because many of them drew spawning salmon, clearly understanding that the salmon were about to die and give back to the stream. Wish us luck with the contest!
Thanks to the kids, Madame Julie, Monsieur Paul and Whitehorse Elementary for supporting this great initiative.
