Windchill Keeping Me Off the Ice

November 30, 2007 at 7:08 pm

The first chill of winter and it’s keeping me off the ice.  As far as temperature goes, -13 degrees should not be a problem but its all the cold, damp, wind coming through it.  I can barely make it from my office to the coffee shop two blocks away in this weather.  The thought of standing for hours next to my fishing hole is not appealing as of yet.  Either I am a supreme wussy or I am not yet dressing properly.  I pulled out the Snow Goose parka for a dog walk today, so I must be getting desperate.

In case you are looking for a simple way to calculate the wind chill factor I pulled out a simple-to-use formula:

Find out the temperature T in degrees Celsius and the wind speed W in kilometres per hour. If you’re in Toronto, you can call Environment Canada at 416-661-0123 to hear a recorded message with current conditions.
Subtract T from 33C to get TS, the difference between the air temperature and your skin temperature.
If W=10, add 10% to TS; if W=20, add 30% to TS; if W=30, add 40% to TS; if W=40, add 48% to TS; if W=50, add 52% to TS; if W=60, add 56% to TS; if W>=70, add 60% to TS.
Subtract TS from 33C to get the windchill.
Example: If the temperature is -2C and the windspeed is 30 km/h, then 33-(-2) = 35, 35*40 = 14, 35+14 = 49, 33-49 = -16, so the windchill equivalent temperature is -16C.  Courtesy of some math dude out of Toronto.

What I find hard to believe if its so cold out, how are my numb fingers going to punch two minutes worth of calculations into my calculator.
