I work in a regular government kind of job. That means I sit in front of a computer all day and type, type away. I really like my job, but give me a chance to fish and I am outta the office. Now if I only had thirty weeks of holidays a year life would be good. With the usual 3-5 weeks of holiday that comes with a gov job you have to pick and choose your days off. There is a week in Haines for dollies, a week for Sockeye, a week for Coho, a good week camping and fishing in the Yukon. With a hunting trip and a visit to the family down south you are already on borrowed time.
That brings me to my post on technology. Last week a good Whitehorse buddy of mine was hosting another mutual friend from Calgary in the area. They really wanted to go fishing the morning before he took off so I did what any friend would do - lend them my boat. I could not go because it was a Tuesday and I had meeting already scheduled. I thought to myself, you can’t fish every day and you have to let some pass by. I sent them off with my boat, told them where and how to fish and went back to work.
As I am sitting in front of my computer typing away I get an email from my buddies Blackberry with the subject line “just caught this”. I wait the few seconds for the download and smack in front of me is a beautiful, six pound Fish Lake Lake Trout. Not only can we fish in pristine wilderness by ourselves, we have cell coverage in the alpine and the ability to simultaneously and wirelessly piss off a buddy sitting in front of a computer.
I use my Blackberry for boring work stuff like writing email and checking project calendars. I’ve obviously been getting it wrong this whole time. Your friend’s is a much wiser use of mobile technology.
Poor Dennis. The next time you’re out (even further afield and outside of blackberry range) you’ll have to modify your “Spot” to say “I caught another one” and have it send the messages to your friend.
I say start emailing pics of each other’s catches to sort of “punk” each other up.
A dueling fish sort of thing!
