Tagish Bridge and Yukon River with Kids

May 22, 2006 at 5:42 pm

Fished the Tagish bridge and Yukon River this weekend and was surprised at the low water how much ice is still out there. Tagish bridge fishing was slow this long weekend. I guess the rule proves true, fish when the locals are out there…there were no locals this weekend.

Saw a bunch of boats at the mouth but have no sense of how they did. Most of the lakes are still chalk full of ice, but the heat this weekend should set them well on their way.

The low water does make for some comfortable and safe fishing with kids at the Yukon River bridge. There are still some deep sections for Grayling and the kids can meander safely along the small beach.

Try a bobber drifting with a fly dropper with the kids.

I find that my four year old likes watching the bobber as it slowly makes its way downstream. It also means a longer play than always having to help re-cast with a mepps lure.

Hey Dennis - enjoyed the piece in Whats Up Yukon and got turned on to your blog from that. Im living in Whitehorse through Sept, and an avid fly fisher/tyer. Ive been chronicling my trip up to Whitehorse, and summer experiences here in the north on the chat board of The Drake mag:

Hi Bruce:

Thanks for the post and the lead on the Drake. They seem to be doing some maintenance so I cant get in right now but Ill check it out. Where do you expect you will be fishing while in Yukon? I can suggest a few lakes around Whitehorse if interested in some stocked rainbow. Tight lines!

Hey -

Tried getting your e-mail and it wasnt popping up for some reason. If you click my profile you should be able to see mine.

So far, Ive been out to Jackson lake for a couple of fun and productive evenings, the mouth of Wolf Creek, Snafu Lake, and a couple sections of the Yukon (we live about a 5-minute walk from the river upstream of Wolf). But any other recs would be great. Looking to get into some pike, and salmon later on in the season in particular if you want to team up.

Tight lines,

Bruce

Pike, I highly recommend Little Atlin Lake. If you put in at the boat launch and head north you get into some great weedbeds loaded with them. You could canoe or boat, be a bit of a jaunt with a belly boat. Impressed by your outings already. Keep me posted.
