Salmon Sighting in Copper Ridge

Fish Art in Whitehorse, Yukon

I am a lover of salmon in all forms. Given the current crisis on the Yukon River we all better love salmon or there won’t be any for us to enjoy. While it is getting harder and harder to see salmon in their native streams there are increasing sightings in Copper Ridge. I am also a lover of “fish art”. Every time I travel I tend to pick up some salmon or fish art. Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Vancouver Island, Richmond…they all carry fish art. This leads me to my most recent addition of some outdoor skookum salmon. Thanks to my mother-in-law Suzanne who is connected to the arts community in BC for picking up these beauties.  Constructed in part with aircraft grade aluminum these fish windvane lures are guaranteed to attract humans. When the wind kicks up, they oscillate like fish swimming upstream.  The artist Buster Simpson states:

These windvane lures are activated by the same material used to catch fish. Humans respond to the same stimulus.  A light diffracting surface with reflective glass impregnated paint interact with both natural and artificial light sources.

I hope that our house will be known as the one with the two salmon swimming upstream. Check out Busters website and view some of his other public art in action.

Looks cool, Dennis. I am sure that Buster will be pleased. It would be great if Buster (who in my estimation is one of the most ‘relevant’ public art artists)could come up to Whitehorse to do a project. Suzanne

You should put that on the Creative Cities agenda for Whitehorse.
