Reason #1 For No Ice-Fishing -41degrees
Source: http://travelyukon.com

This is just plain not fair.  Its just too cold.  Let me tell you how my minus 40 day is going so far.  Woke up with the house at 11 degrees.  We had our fireplace running and forgot to put on the oil heat.  When the fire ran out the heat ran out.  Our newer car would not start.  Lost the power steering in the older car. My oldest just came back from the doctor with mild pnenmonia. I tripped on my shoelace outside of my son’s school and fell in full stride on my face.  I barely fit in our Eagle Talon on a good day…add a parka, hat, boots, two kids and a wife, lunchboxes, laptops, backpacks, hats, mitts, etc.. and we have used up 110% of all usable space.  Did I mention I have no power steering?  Add cranking a steering wheel with 200 pounds of brute force in a cramped car and you have a very, very happy family.

I’ll stop whining soon.  You would think I could handle this weather.  We lived in Inuvik for five years before moving south, so I know what cold weather is.  Truth be told, I have become soft since moving south to Whitehorse.  I guess we need to earn our Northern allowance somehow!

I am not stepping out onto any frozen lakes any time soon. Ice-fishing just is not worth it in this temperature.  Not only does it just suck because its too cold, but any fish you pull out of the hole in this temperature will freeze and go into shock right away.  It makes releasing a fish (even quickly) impossible. Not that I am suggesting catch-and-release ice-fishing but it leaves no room for error where the regs are concerned.  In either case, have a look at the temperature in this image and you will notice the lows all week are hovering around -40.

The description of your morning experience had me both laughing and cringing. Ahhh, life in the very frozen north.

ha, ha, ha…. I just love the way you express yourself… I can so picture your family packed into that car…

Keep your chin up… looks like it’s breaking so the fish will be calling you back soon enough :-)
