No Luck Ice Fishing?  Shoot a Rocket.

Carl's Ice Fishing Distraction

I’ve been struggling to catch fish lately.  Rather than catch fish this past weekend I would take the kids out ice-fishing.  Fishing with kids at 25 degrees below takes a special kind of patience, no expectations, and a great amount of preparation.  With that in mind I took the kids to Pumphouse Lake.  It was cold so I figured I could get about an hour out of the kids before they got cold. If you have read my location report Pumphouse Lake Yukon Ice Fishing Report you would know that my slump continued.  However, when fishing with the kids, catching fish doesn’t really matter.  This recent outing featured the standard, hot dogs, hot chocolate and a lake fire.  We thought we would add some extra fun to the day by shooting a rocket.  Yes, my friend Carl owns a guaranteed half-hour distraction device sure to make any little boys (or girls) squeal.  His rocket shoots fire and lifts off hundreds of feet in the air.  It even has a safe remote triggering mechanism.  The fish were not biting but the kids were psyched.  Unfortunately, the rocket did not ignite (due to cold) but it still killed another half hour…thus doing its job.  We’ll try it again when it warms up, but I definately agree with bringing rockets ice-fishing.  A rather unconventionally pairing, but that’s what Yukon fishing is all about…trying new things and getting the kids outside.

Its the big set-up on Pumphouse Lake.

Hope Zack and Max weren’t too disappointed!  I never thought about the cold impeding a rocket launch…

Okay, guys, I am wondering if you aren’t using the kids as an excuse to go out ice-fishing and playing with your new rocket!!! Aren’t there laws about that? But, seriously folks, in the summer time, wouldn’t it be great to attach a lure to the rocket and launch (cast) it towards the horizon. You’d be able to reel it in for the rest of the day!!

Another great distraction while ice fishing is to go fly a kite! With a good kite, a small breeze will keep it in the air and since it is attached to your fishing line, the guys, er… I mean the kids, would have something on their line while the fishing is slow!

If they hit something solid, Frisbees seem to shatter when it is colder than -5C.
I haven’t tried lawn darts yet!

I’m just passing on my experiences while the fish aren’t biting!! If anyone else has any more ideas, please pass them on as mine are getting boring!

PS: Thanks for keeping the focus that it’s all about the kids!
