June 2006 Hi Everyone
Here we are with a whole new season - a little busy and also unusual. To start we rebuilt the dock (it had seen better days) at our warehouse at Mile 1118 on the Alaska Highway. This is the spot where we fly in all our supplies. The North has had a late spring delaying our flights to the lodge to open. We had reports that the lake was half open - guess which half when we arrived on our first flight?? The half farthest from the lodge so we landed as close as we could, unloaded supplies and walked - about an hour and a half to the Lodge. We being myself, Sharon our new cook and Lisa our new cabin girl.
Everything was good at the lodge except for a broken window in one of the cabins. Upon a full CSI investigation we confirmed that yes, the grouse laying on the floor was the guilty party.
Our first group was from Toronto and Washington - great fishing after ice out for trolling spin casting and fly fishing. They were a little late getting to the lodge due to a heavy snowfall on June 4th. This is the first time that we have seen snow at this time since we have had the lodge.
Our second group was from England, Colorado and California - again a mix of trollers, casters and fly fishers. The trollers and casters had great success with the five of diamonds, half wave, fire tigers and pink spoons. These worked well for both the trout and pike.
To date our largest trout is 38 pounds and the pike was 41 inches. A couple of days ago one boat caught 50 fish before dinner!
The fly fishers are finding success with big leeches, black, brown and purple as well as egg sucking leeches. We have been having the largest midge hatches that we have ever seen. Needless to say, chironomid fishing is unbelievable. The fly fishing is great for lake trout, pike and lake whitefish.
The weather has been perfect - no darkness, temperatures over 80 and clear blue skies. The bush is dry but luckily no forest fires or lightning strikes.
We still have some spots open for July and August - give Sharon a call at the office if you would like to join us. We are booking well into July for 2007.
See you soon,
Brian and Staff
