Hi Everyone!
We are all doing well and the weather has straightened out - our last group had a little rain and wind but still no frost!
Fishing really picked up last night with four trout over 40 pounds. Pike fishing was also great with one group catching over 60 one afternoon - ranging 24 - 45 inches. Jigs of various colours, large streamers and spoons are working well for the lake trout. Trolling, casting and fly fishing has been great for the pike. We have had the largest chironomid hatches we have ever seen and they are olive green in colour. The hatches of this size are a fisherman’s dream come true.
It is too late for top water fishing as the pike have moved to deeper water. The darker colours are working the best with both spoons and flies.
There are lots of wild flowers blooming and the fire weed is finished for this year but there is an abundance of wild blueberries, raspberries, cloud berries and arctic strawberries.
For you birders - we had a rare sighting - a Pomarine Jaeger and he was causing quite a commotion with the gulls. We have lots of loons, both common and arctic and the young ducks are starting to fly. No sign of the geese flying south and the swans haven’t arrived on their journey south.
Every evening we see moose and a group of four wolf pups have found out kitchen scrap area and can readily been seen at this site on the lake.
We saw the first stars two nights ago as it is now starting to get a little dark. Soon we will see the Northern Lights, a phenomenon in the north country.
See you soon.
Brian and Staff
PS - Thanks to Don and Stu Barnes for the photo - quite a fish!
