Introducing Yukon’s “Larger than Life” Pike Fly

May 06, 2006 at 10:18 pm

As you recall a few posts ago, I mentioned the new Yukon brand and how I might be inspired to create a fly that is “Larger than Life”. This was my first shot at it. I can already think of a number of modifications to make it more fishable…like a weed guard…but it was worth a try. I may try it out in the weed beds of Little Atlin or Marsh Lake and see if they think it is “Larger than Life”.

The fly was chosen because the front Grizzly Hackle signifies the Mountains, the second white hackle signifies the Snow Cap over the mountains, the orange deer hair (parachute style) is the bright Sun emerging over the Mountains (I am thinking Kluane Mountains here), the two brown chenille bodies signify Stream/gravel beds and the middle white/aqua chenille is the River, the gold tinsel ribbing is of course Yukon Gold and the brown marabou tail is the expansive Tundra.

Ok, it is a bit of a stretch and cheesy but it may catch fish.

Speaking about fishable Pike flies, I pulled out an old Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine (http://www.canflyfish.com/) and found the following characteristics for an effective Pike fly:

  1. It must be lively in water.
  2. It should pulse and/or dip seductively and should work well when moved slowly.
  3. It must be durable.
  4. It should be easy and quick to tie, from readily available and, preferably inexpensive materials.
  5. It should easily adapt to some form of shock tippet (either wire or heavy monofilament).
Email me or comment and let me know what you think?

Ive had my eye on a pontoon boat for some time now. I have friends who use them all the time for river tripsthey pack coolers and everything. It seems like a good option for people who dont have a truck and therefore cant transport a boat. But, I still havent tried one out.

Ill have to give it a try as well. I am thinking one would have to use an achor on windy days, but I am sure the comfort factor makes it worth it. I think Ill try floating the Takhini as well and see how it works.
