I am a hack fly-tyer, but I try none-the-less. I have to get at it regularly to get anything out of it, but when I do, fly tying can be a relaxing, creative, and value-laden recreational activity.
How about getting that special Yukon angler a fly-tying kit this Christmas? I know that Sports North has carried them in the past. Why not swing by and have a peek if Glen still carries them.
At a few bucks a fly these days, it does not take long for the kit to pay for itself. Sitting next to the vice with a scotch, beer or wine in hand is also very good for the soul. Its kind of like an anglers version of meditation. You centre yourself and with a clear mind, tie for hours at a time. It is amazing how much time you can sit there in the zone, just staring at hooks, beads and feathers.
For those already into tying, how about a crafty gift this Christmas. Bruce Ross provided a fly recipe in Whats Up for the Fly Brooch Pin. It offers step by step instruction on this elaborate gift. I recently came across another story in Hatches Online Magazine titled Santa at the Tying Bench. . It also provides step by step instructions on this neat little craft that can be tied in a safety pin. I might even try tying this one with the kids! Beats the usual pairs of socks Mom gets each year.
