On Friday night at 6:30pm, approximately 60 people gathered to release Rainbow Trout fry in Hidden Lakes. This event was part of a program called ”Hooked on Yukon Fishing”. It was an incredible turn-out. Susan Thompson, Fisheries Managment Biologist with YTG and I were absolutely stunned at the number of people that came to support the stocking program at Hidden Lakes. We met at the Yukon Fish Ladder and drove to the Hidden Lakes parking lot. Susan handed out large containers with wriggly, little Rainbow Trout. These trout came from Vancouver and had been traveling all day. Participants then walked their fish from Hidden #2 to Hidden #1. It was great to see families getting into the spirit of the event while walking along a well forested nature trail. It was a gorgeous evening which was fitting...I think people realized we were doing something special. People spread out along the lake shore and introduced the fry to their new home. There were long time Yukoners, new Yukoners, tourists, young, old, experienced anglers, unexperienced anglers, immigrants, long-time Canadians, women, children and families...it was an incredible mix of people all brought together through fish. It was a great evening!
The good news is that if you missed it, there is the second public fry release of Chinook on Sunday at Wolf Creek- 1pm. There are also a number of other special “Hooked on Yukon Fishing” events happening throughout the summer, including, National Fishing week, Free Family Fishing Weekend and the weekly talks at the Fish Ladder every Wednesday in July and August. It’s going to be a great summer.
