On the heels of the welcome to participate in the Skagway fishing derby, the Haines King Salmon derby is cancelled due to poor stocks in the Chilkat River. The story in the Chilkat Valley News states that it is the lowest run since they have been mark-recapturing them in 1991. It goes on to state that the older Kings are just not returning like they used to. For the full story visit http://chilkatvalleynews.com/story-1.html.
Not to sound alarmist, but this is seems to be the calm before the storm according to a recent study on the infestation of sea lice in wild salmon stocks of the Pacific ocean. This, due to an outbreak which began in 2001 in farmed salmon which are raised in the Pacific and continues to this day.

Things are not well in the Pacific, and it makes me upset, as I have this nagging feeling that I will be telling stories to my children about the days when we used to fish for wild salmon to eat. This, instead of them experiencing it themselves.
When will our leaders resolve this and many other situations discussed on this blog, and do what is right?

My feelings echo those of Samson. Thinking back to just a few years ago and now looking at today’s dire situation, the experience of salmon fishing in Haines has changed considerably. Can they ever recover or will we be hearing this type of report, with increasingly worse news, at the start of each season?
Guys, I am with you on this. It is just plain sad. I was telling someone today that in my limited time fishing Haines I have seen the same decrease.
Its damn scary. I guess the options are to put the rod away or preach responsible angling. I maintain that we are doing more good if we take our kids out fishing and teach them how to do it responsibly. I believe they are more likely to be stewards of the environment. Better to do this than to have no connection whatsoever. Fish don’t come from Superstore, they come from the ocean.
We have been so spoiled for so long in the Yukon and I think it is only going to get tougher and maybe it has to be that way. Just look at BC and the incredible rules and restrictions they have on all their fisheries…I don’t think we are that far off.
