This past year I was fortunate enough to get hooked up with Susan Thompson, fisheries biologist with the Department of Environment. YTG. We discussed some local fishing issues and then got on to her other passion, fish farming in Kenya. Susan is responsible for setting up numerous fish farming operations in rural parts of Kenya in order to stimulate local economic development opportunities. She has also taken this further and now provides opportunities for tailoring and sports for kids. She is in Kenya right now working away helping Kenyans become more self-sufficient raising catfish and tilapia. I plan on writing a fair bit more about Susan over time as she is truly acting globally and thinking (and acting) locally. She is also always looking for donations of equipment and $$$ to help her. She has recently released a new website called www.fish4kenya.com and is starting to populate it. She also has started a flickr photo account that will surely make you realize that we could all be helping globally in our own ways.
For those interested, I have an African media story on the great work she is doing…http://allafrica.com/stories/200712030180.html.
If you want to donate to Susan’s cause you can try and email her through her website or contact me (dennis@fishonyukon.com) and I can pass it along to her. She does have intermittent internet use in Kenya so contacting can be a challenge.
Susan is an outstanding resource on all things fishy and the folks in Kenya are lucky to have access to her knowledge and passion for the work she does.
Susan has a wealth of info rolling around in her head and I have benefitted from her knowledge of Yukon fisheries on numerous occasions - she knows where the really big grayling live.
Love the new website Dennis! Good to see a Yukon fishing site that is relevant and meaningful!

Thanks Doug. Susan is amazing and another example of a Yukoner excelling in her field. If we could all do what Susan is doing this world would be a better place.
Here’s to the Midnight Risers as well.

I haven’t visited for awhile. First, let me say your new (at least to me) design is fantastic. One of the most visually impressive sites I’ve found.
Next, I have to comment about this post. I think it is great that you took time to post this. I hope to take a trip to Zimbabwe in 2008 to work with caregivers of children with HIV. We are very blessed to have the ability to fish for recreation as opposed to survival. Thanks for posting this information.
Chris
Thanks Chris. I really like your site as well. We seem to have a similar philosophy about fishing and blogging. Good for you working with children with HIV. People like Susan and yourself are an inspiration. I would suggest there is a correlation between people who care for fish and people who care for people (and naturally the environment).
