Dare I Say: Pull out the Gear for Spring Cleaning?

February 05, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Spring is just around the corner. Ok, maybe a really long corner like one of those twenty kilometer long corners like on the Dempster Highway, but nevertheless a corner.

Adam S. sent me the following email:

I may be grasping at straws, but this could be a good time for folks to stretch & wax up their fly lines and take the sand and grime out of all their reels. Maybe even remove that ½ sandwich (that elusive stink) and re-sort and re-stock your tackle box, patch that leak in the waders and shine up your camping cooking gear.

I am going to get on this for two reasons, number one, I share my fishing room with the Christmas decorations. Every December in a craze to set up the tree I destroy the room and in January I chuck all the Christmas crap back in just to get it out of sight. Second reason is that I now have enough gear that I have to keep organized. It would be easier if I used the “five of diamonds” for everything, unfortunately, I have decided to invest (yes, financially) in this passion of mine. Which basically means that I own about two more of everything I could possibly use in my lifetime. I figure if I stopped completely buying fishing gear and just use what I own now, I could probably fish until I was about 237 years old. I should be good for a while. Of course, I can now pass this all down to my children and their children and then they could sell them as antiques on the equivalent of ebay in the year 2207. See its all an investment, just can’t understand why my wife doesn’t think so.

In either care, I generally organize my gear into about 15 different categories, give or take:

1. pike lures and gear
2. lake trout lures and gear (includes trolling)
3. rainbow lures and gear
4. grayling lures and gear
5. coho lures and gear
6. sockeye lures and gear
7. spin rods and reels
8. flies all sorted into colours/size/dries/wets/terrestrials, etc..
9. fly rods and reels
10. fly lines
11. fly fishing accessories
12. fishing misc. nets,
13. kids gear
14. ice fishing
15. small gear (extra hooks, swivels, weights, etc..)
16. cases of all kinds
17. fishing clothing, waders, sunglasses, vests, etc..
18. other stuff

I am getting tired thinking of it, maybe I should have started spring cleaning in November…I’ll never be ready!
