An Extreme Ice-Fishing Offer

November 20, 2007 at 6:16 pm

As winter firmly takes hold, I have no choice but to get myself prepped for ice-fishing.  I know that our waters will be locked in for at least five months so I have to look forward to sitting next to a frozen hole or two and tempting a fishy with my presentation.  At the same time I am thinking of those anglers on the opposite side of the world, closer to the equator.  As I drill holes into the ice they are fishing the flats in the Bahamas looking for bonefish.  We are a four season destination with one long winter, half a summer and the two little book-ends of spring and the fall.  Those poor souls in the tropics missing the variety we have in our fishing destination.  I can’t even imagine how strange it would be for a life-long angler from Barbados to try a bit of ice-fishing.  At least us northerners have a point of reference.  We cast into soft water for six months of the year.  I imagine it would be very hard for them to understand that their are fish under a six foot sheet of ice.  What would they survive on?  Would they not freeze?  It is quite amazing to think that fish can survive pole to pole and have adapted to live in such diverse conditions. I am guessing their are some passionate anglers in the tropics that would like to try this thing they call ice fishing.

If there are any anglers in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbardos, Belize or any other warm, exotic place that starts with a “B” that come across this posting on the fishing cyber-highway I propose a house and gear swap.  For two weeks, I’ll swap you my house, snowmobile, ice auger, ice fishing gear, snowsuit, sled and anything you need to pull fish from a frozen hole. I’ll leave detailed maps and instructions on where and how to fish. In return, I’ll borrow your house (preferably on a beach), boat, sunscreen, maps and equipment.

I am willing to trade a piece of this heaven for something a little warmer…any takers?
