These lakes in this region are crazy big.
I am a little behind these days in my writing so I’ll try and knock off a couple of brief reports at once. A work trip which lead to fishing at Ethel Lake, the Klondike River and a couple of other unnamed waters along the way. With a travel budget (gas and a car rental) provided by work I took off early in an attempt to fish as much as possible along the way. I was off to Mayo, Keno, Dawson, Pelly and Carmacks and without family I planned on fishing evey chance I got. After throwing my line across a couple of highway culverts I decided to be a bit more selective in what water I fished. Long story short, I ended up at the massive Ethel Lake campground. Realizing I could only cover a little bit of the water with my belly boat, I focussed on the weedbeds close to shore and got into a couple of Pike. I won’t give too much away as it will be in the next Whats Up Yukon in my “Been there Fished That” column.
My next adventure was along the Klondike Highway towards Keno, unfortunately no pictures but some great Pike and Grayling fishing. The lakes in this region are so large you need boats to get into Lakers.
My final adventure was a great little Klondike River excursion for Grayling with a colleague. Again another story on this coming out in Whats Up Yukon . We had about two hours between work meetings and a scheduled dinner in town. We fished, caught a bunch and got back just in time to lose my money at Diamond Tooth Gerties. Lets put it this way, it took me about the same amount of time to play and land five small grayling then it took to lose $60. Some days you win, some days you lose.
Mary’s first Grayling in the Yukon. After a quick lesson she handled the fly rod like a pro.
The sloppy photo from my belly boat.
